First Time Match Guide

New to football? Or want to watch some WSL for the first time. Here is a quick and simple guide for you.

Please not that many clubs also have first time fan guides so please follow the information on their! This is just to let you know / help you out if you are unsure on anything.

Firstly, you need to understand how the women's football tier system works in England.

The WSL is the top league, followed by the championship as shown here (credits to ON HER SIDE for this)

The following guide is going to mainly help you if you are going to a WSL match, although its pretty much the same information for any match.

Heres some key information:

  1. some WSL sides play at their male sides grounds all the time (for example Reading ) although other sides play at a mixture of their male grounds and their own grounds (for example, Arsenal who play a mix of games at the emirates and Boreham wood).

  2. Apart from the women's super league their is also the FA cup and continental cup (what is the carabao cup in the men's game)

  3. If you are going to matches as a first time fan be prepared to get to the ground as early as possible. Alot of first time fans , or people who have not been in a while, do not consider this. You don't want to miss the start of the match and you are also making yourself an inconvience to other fans.

  4. You can watch all the WSL matches on either BBC (sometimes red button required), Sky sports or the FA player. Currently you can also watch the women's champions league fixtures free on DAZN youtube channels too .

Another thing to note is that quiet a few stadiums have both standing and seating zones, unlike the premier league. So , if you would prefer to sit down make sure to book the right tickets on the booking site- its a mistake easily made.

Finally: Make sure you enjoy the match ! Despite their being quite a lot of information above this is in no way to scare you or put you off! If you are thinking of going to watch a female football match for the first time the best advice I can give you is: GO OUT THEIR. We always welcome new fans , and if its not for you no harm has been done!

See you at the matches in 2023
